Young Earth vs Old Earth
Have you ever thought really hard about the age of the Earth. There seems to be two sides to every debate. There is a really good video on this topic on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0ZzU_Y8YD0 I don't think it settles the issue but I think both sides are presented clear enough. On one side there Ken Ham a firm believer in 6 days of creation and that the Earth is thousands of years old. Hugh Ross on the other side in which the Earth is millions of years old. I want to stress here that both sides make their arguments from the God’s Word. Something that is refreshing and mentally simulating.
Ken is adamant in his defense of young Earth. His passion, desire and knowledge of scripture are impressive and his points are well delivered. His believes that anything outside the Bible is an assault on the Bible and if allowed it weakens Scripture. For him to not accept scripture as a literal 6 day event allow people to doubt that scripture is true. If that doubt is allowed to creep in it can expand. What about the flood, surviving in a fish for three days etc.? This doubt is the first deception by Satan to Eve. Doubt cannot be allowed to creep in.
Hugh as a scientist interprets these Biblical accounts in terms of what he observes in science and uses the Bible to back them up. In his argument the days are not literal days but eras. He makes his case using Genesis 1&2, parts of Job and more. Adam watched trees grow, tended a garden all before “at long last” he saw Eve. His view is that we need to look at the 66 Books of Bible and include other passages in order to try and make sense with what science observes and what the Bible teaches. There where other panelists but Hugh and Ken did most of the speaking. Sean McDowell chimed in at one point and stated the both men were using scripture in order to help understand their position, which seems like the voice of reason. Ken does a disservice to his point by constantly interrupting and over talk other points of view. That may be due to his passion but gentleness and kindness goes along way to not losing people in the debate or observing one. While the topic is a fascinating one if you were to witness to people and start with the young Earth debate as a topic the person you are speaking to might not pay much attention. In the video all men agreed that it is our faith In Jesus Christ that died and rose again is the cornerstone of our faith. Maybe we should start there and work backward to more complex areas in Scriptures. As a believer I respect both men and their mission. As an apologist I want to listen to Paul 1 Corinthians 15:14NKJV And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty.
